Let’s be honest—Valentine’s Day is a bit of a minefield, isn't it? It’s that strange time of year where we’re expected to feel overwhelmed with romance while simultaneously trying to remember if it’s bin day or if the dog has been fed.
I was sitting in my kitchen the other day, wearing my own pair of Grá & Glitter earrings (because why not look like a disco ball while cleaning the oven?), and I realized something. We spend a lot of time waiting for someone else to notice the "subtle" hints we’ve been dropping since November.
We’ve all been there. The expectant look on our faces as a partner walks in with a plastic-wrapped bouquet from the garage and a heart-shaped box of shortbread he found in the 'seasonal' aisle of the chemist—right next to the fungal cream and the vitamins.
That’s why this year, I’m advocating for a bit of radical self-gifting. At RainbowRegalia, I make things that are one-of-a-kind pieces that don’t care about traditions or "the done thing." Whether it’s the Aladdin Flash bolts or the Claddagh Swagger earrings, these pieces are for the people who are currently sorting socks, running to auditions, or—like me—finding stray beads in their bra at 11 PM.
So, here’s my advice for February 14th:
-
Buy the jewellery you actually want.
-
Pour a glass of something bubbly (or a very strong cup of Barry’s).
-
Be your own best match.
Because life is too short for boring jewellery. And if you are shopping for someone else? For the love of God, stay away from the garage flowers. I’ve done the hard work for you—every piece is unique, just like the person you’re trying to impress (even if that person is yourself).
