Sailors used to get swallow tattoos for every 5,000 nautical miles they survived, allegedly to guarantee they'd always find their way back home. Which is romantic and all, until you realise it usually meant staggering back into the house three weeks late, smelling of rum, hoping nobody asks too many questions about where the rent money went.

I made this one-of-a-kind piece for anyone who needs to look like they have a rich maritime history without actually having to go near a boat. At the centre of it is a repurposed enamel swallow—looking intensely focused and carrying a tiny charm, like it’s mid-flight with a piece of extremely damaging gossip. I’ve balanced it with deep blue lapis lazuli beads and little pops of red glass seed beads, all recycled, giving it that crisp vintage tattoo feel without looking like you’re in fancy dress.

The whole thing hangs from a gold-plated chain with a front-facing toggle clasp, measuring 43cm above the toggle so it sits right where people have to look at it.

The Details:

  • Components: Repurposed enamel swallow centrepiece, repurposed lapis lazuli beads, repurposed red glass seed beads

  • Chain & Clasp: Gold-plated chain with front-facing gold-plated toggle clasp

  • Length: 43cm above the toggle clasp

  • Vibe: Vintage sailor tattoo, slightly rogue, zero sea sickness
