I was staring at a tiny, handmade loaf of Brennan’s bread yesterday and I had a bit of an epiphany.
Most jewellery designers spend their time dreaming of diamonds or sweeping gold filigree. I spend an alarming amount of my week worrying if the butter-to-potato ratio on a tiny Kerrygold earring is "emotionally accurate."
Why are we like this? Why does a nation of people—who have survived millennia of history and complicated weather—get genuinely misty-eyed at the sight of a packet of Meanies?
Nostalgia You Can Wear
At RainbowRegalia, I’ve realized that my best-sellers aren't always the most "sensible" pieces. They are the ones that spark a very specific, very Irish memory.
Take the Today’s Bread, Tomorrow’s Hangover necklace. It’s more than just a nod to a crisp sandwich; it’s a tribute to the Sunday morning survival strategy. It’s the red and blue pack of Tayto and the wax paper of the Brennan’s loaf that stood between us and total existential collapse after a night out.
Then there’s the Pat and Kerry mismatched earrings. A potato and a block of butter. It is the most romantic pairing in the history of our country. Forget Romeo and Juliet—give me a spud and a bit of gold foil.
The "Six Pack for Dinner" Philosophy
We love this kitsch stuff because it’s a shorthand for "I’m one of you."
When you wear a pair of Chickatees or Meanies earrings, you aren't just wearing an accessory. You’re signaling to the world that you’ve spent your childhood in a damp caravan in Brittas Bay, or that you know the specific, salty joy of a "Six Pack for Dinner" when you’re too tired to cook.
It’s "Beauty from the Broken," but also "Beauty from the Deep-Fried."
More Than a Laugh
There’s a lot of pressure out there to be minimalist, to be "chic," to have a capsule wardrobe that is entirely beige. But honestly? Beige is boring. I’d much rather be the person at the party with a Brennan’s loaf dangling from their ear.
It’s a conversation starter, it’s a bit of a wink, and it’s a reminder that we don't always have to take ourselves so seriously. We are a country of storytellers, and sometimes the best stories are told through a tiny, glittery, red bag of Snax.
I’m off to go see if I can create a mould for a mini Mr. Tayto.
Stay salty, stay sparkly 🥔.
